The Edge Annual Lecture 2015 – Nicholas Wyman delivered the keynote speech and it was followed by a panel discussion.
Wyman argues:
“A big part of the problem is that we are looking to the wrong institutions to develop and train workers. Most of the positions that remain unfilled – and that offer meaningful, rewarding, and well-paid work – do not require a university degree.”
“Instead, the labour market needs more people with good school qualifications plus an apprenticeship, professional qualification or foundation degree.”
Wyman’s lecture drew parallels between the growing skills gap in the American labour market and challenges here in the UK – particularly, stubbornly high youth unemployment at the same time as thousands of roles remain unfilled. In his best-selling book, Job U, Wyman describes this phenomenon as “people without jobs and jobs without people”.
